Brokenhead Ojibway Nation is mourning the loss of one of our community members who was struck and killed on Provincial Highway 59 that runs directly through our community. For years, we have met with the Government of Manitoba and demanded that they address our concerns and improve the safety of Provincial Highway 59 through our community. It’s unacceptable and complete negligence that it continues to lack the basic safety measures that are in place elsewhere.
This is not the first time that we have lost a community member this way. We are calling on Manitoba to immediately implement a speed reduction, install proper illumination, and provide safe crossing points. We want an immediate re-set and renewed relationship regarding traffic conditions, and a commitment to full engagement on long-term solutions.
This tragedy was witnessed by youth who are now traumatized and we are deploying our mental health resources to help deal with what happened. We are also calling on the provincial and federal governments to assist with the resources that our youth and our community will need to heal.
